Brazil`s former president undergoes radiation

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is expected to undergo daily outpatient radiation sessions Monday through Friday for the next 6-7 weeks.

Sao Paulo: Doctors say former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has undergone his first session of radiation for throat cancer.

Doctors at Sao Paulo`s Sirio Libanes Hospital say in a statement that Silva also underwent a chemotherapy session.

Silva spent six hours at the hospital on Wednesday and then returned to his home in an industrial suburb of Sao Paulo.

Silva is expected to undergo daily outpatient radiation sessions Monday through Friday for the next six to seven weeks.

He began chemotherapy in October after the tumour in his throat was detected.
Doctors have said that thanks to the chemotherapy, the tumour in Silva`s throat is now 75 percent smaller than when they first found it.
