Baghdad: Iraqi police say a car bomb has
killed eight Shiite pilgrims on their way to one of the
country`s holiest shrines.

Officials say women and children were among the killed
when a car parked on the side of a road blew up early this
afternoon.

Two police officials in Baghdad and Salahuddin
provinces said at least 43 people were wounded in the blast.

Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not
authorised to release the information.

The pilgrims were headed to the golden shrine of
Samarra for Friday ceremonies marking the death of the 11th
imam.

The shrine is one of Shiism`s holiest sites in Iraq,
and was attacked by Sunni insurgents in February 2006 in one
of the major flashpoints of the war.
