Athens: An appeals court in Greece has cleared three suspected members of a far-left terrorist group that was blamed for more than 30 attacks on American targets, citing insufficient evidence.
The group Revolutionary Popular Struggle, or ELA, is blamed for two murders and scores of murder attempts and bombings between 1975 and 1995, including numerous attacks against American targets.
The court on Thursday overturned the 2004 convictions and the 25-year sentences of Christos Tsigaridas, Irene Athanasaki, and Angeletos Kanas. A fourth suspect died of cancer during the 13-month appeal, which was held inside the maximum security wing of an Athens prison.
