Finnish mother gets life sentence for killing five newborns

A court Finland on Monday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for killing her five infants.

Helsinki: A court Finland on Monday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for killing her five infants.

The woman gave birth to the babies in her residences between 2005 and 2013. But after birth she left the babies without care and later deposited the corpses in refrigerators and basement, Xinhua reported.

The corpses were uncovered in June 2014, when outsiders complained about an unpleasant odour coming from the basement.

The woman told the Oulu court in northern Finland that she had thought the children were stillborn.

Experts heard by the court said a child can survive without care at least three days.

Giving birth at home is very rare in Finland, a country that boasts good prenatal and maternity care. Finland has also a fairly liberal abortion legislation allowing abortion on social grounds such as the life situation.

The woman was employed in the restaurant sector.
