Sydney: An unidentified masked man armed with a knife has robbed an Indian supermarket in Australia after threatening two women shopkeepers with their lives.

The incident took place last night at the Indian Grocery Store in the coastal city of Coffs Harbour, around 540 kms from here.

The man, in his early 20s, emptied the cash register into a plastic bag as he threatened the two young women, leaving them shocked. The robber then fled on foot.

Detective Inspector Darren Jameson said the women were not physically injured, but were shaken by the incident.

The women were not identified.

"Anybody who does go through one of these experiences, it does cause a significant amount of immediate harm, and obviously fear," he was quoted as saying by Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"They'll be provided support throughout the next couple of weeks by us, and a referral to other assistance if they need it," Jameson added.

The robbed amount was being ascertained by the authorities who initiated a probe to nab the culprit.
