The Israeli cabinet on Sunday slapped economic sanctions on Iran and on international companies engaging in business with the Islamic Republic.

Jerusalem: The Israeli cabinet on Sunday
slapped economic sanctions on Iran and on international
companies engaging in business with the Islamic Republic.

Among the sanctions is an amendment to the Prohibition
on Money Laundering Law that will enable the expansion of
oversight and control vis-a-vis elements trading with Iran.

"Amongst other steps this will limit contact between
the state and companies that trade with Iran," according to a
statement issued from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu`s
office.

"In order to advance the sanctions, the State of
Israel will declare Iran and bodies linked to it to be enemy
elements," The Jerusalem Post quoted the statement as saying.

Iran is facing UN sanctions over its controversial
nuclear programme.

The Western countries suspect the programme is cover
for developing a nuclear weapons capability, a charge Iran
strongly denies.
