London: Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, under pressure over a series of sex scandals, has been asked to avoid "spontaneous" public walkabouts after an intelligence report warned that there was a risk of "isolated acts of violence".
The warning by the "Revolutionary Brigades Fighters for Communism" asked Berlusconi to quit politics and "surrender to common justice". A letter sent to the left-wing newspaper Il Riformista warned that if the Italian leader neglected the call "the sentence of Communist justice will be inevitable", The Times newspaper said today.
Elio Vito, Minister for Relations with Parliament, said an intelligence report on the Berlusconi’s safety had concluded there was a risk of "isolated acts of violence", according to the report in the British daily.
The letter containing the death threats had the symbol of the Red Brigades, the Far Left terrorist organisation which carried out murders and kidnappings in the 1970s, the period known as "The Years of Lead".
Sandro Bondi, the Minister of Culture and a close aide of Berlusconi, said he feared a return to the "Years of Lead". He blamed the "ugly atmosphere of hate" created by those who accused Berlusconi of dictatorial ambition.
The embattled Prime Minister faces renewed corruption charges after a decision by Italy’s Constitutional Court to overturn a law giving him immunity from prosecution. However, Berlusconi dismissed the threat, He vowed to carry on as usual.
In May the Italian leader`s wife, Veronica Lario, sought a divorce after Berlusconi attended the 18th birthday in Naples of Noemi Letizia, an aspiring model.
