Tokyo: Prefectural police headquarters across Japan set up task forces on Thursday to crack down on election violations prior to the upper House election slated for July 21, focusing particularly on online campaigning.
As the ban on online campaigning has been removed from the upcoming House of Councillors race, the Tokyo metropolitan police have assigned two investigators on cybercrime to the unit.
The Osaka prefectural police have also designated a number of officers who previously worked for IT-related companies to its task force to closely monitor campaigning.
The government is set to finalize the election schedule at Friday`s Cabinet meeting, with official campaigning expected to start on July 4.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe`s Liberal Democratic Party is seeking to regain control of the upper House, following landslide victories in both the House of Representatives and Tokyo Assembly elections in the past six months.
