Nigeria air crash: Dana Air not an Indian company Accra: An aircraft in Nigeria that crashed killing 193 people is not Indian owned, an airline official said.

Dana Air, owners of the Boeing 803 carrier that crashed on June 03 in Lagos, Nigeria is not an Indian company and the only connection with India is its managing director, Jacky Hathiramani, group communications manager Dana group Tony Usidamen told a news agency over phone.

"Dana Group is wholly owned registered company in Nigeria with Nigerians as directors but, we have a managing director Jacky Hathiramani who is Indian," Usidamen added.

Usidamen could not immediately confirm the number of years that Mahendra Singh Rathore, the co-pilot on the flight who lost his life, had spent with the company.

A company statement had said: "The first officer had flown 1,100 flight hours, 800 of which (were) on the MD83 aircraft."

On June 03, the aircraft crashed on a flight from Abuja to Lagos, killing all 146 passengers and seven crew members and another 40 on the ground.

The company said: "The aircraft had totalled over 60,000 flight hours.... Its last 400-hourly check was May 30, 2012 while the statutory annual maintenance is not until September 2012."

Aviation Minister Stella Oduah told reporters on Tuesday that the airline has been suspended indefinitely for operational safety reasons pending the outcome of investigations into the crash.

Dana Airlines Limited (Dana Air) is a member of Dana Group of Companies Plc.

The airline began commercial flight operations on November 10, 2008 and has grown to become one of Nigeria's leading airlines, operating daily flights to Abuja, Calabar, Lagos, Port Harcourt and Uyo.

The airline currently has five Boeing MD83 aircrafts in its fleet.

Dana Air is part of the Dana Group which started operations in Nigeria in the 1980s. In addition to pharmaceuticals, the group diversified into bulk import of industrial chemicals, commodities, polyethylenes, automobiles, and electronics.

There is no sense in the statements that blames should not be apportioned. Why not? Do accidents just happen? No, they happen when an unsafe condition is met with an unsafe act, so how can any sane person suggest that blames should not be apportioned. All accidents are preventable, so let us find out why Dana Air crashed. This is crucial and must not be compromised by our usual corruption and bribery.

Indian corruption is evident even in another country.. Blame should be taken if we are at fault. Indian companies are known for buying cheap goods for maximum profits, with full disregard to human life. The fact the Managing director run away from the country and back to India shows that he has something to hide and was not man enough to face the consequence of his actions. Its about time India took responsibility for its people and their actions be it in the country or abroad. India’s hands in Nigerian blood

I would rethink continue doing business with Dana Group companies. A big group like Dana should have gone beyond the statutory checks to protect their other concerns. Why are they operating a 22 yrs plane when the minimum age is 20 yrs. Of course, money has changed hand with Aviation officials?

Let`s stop this blame game. An accident is an accident. It happens all over the world. Let`s remedy the operating environment instead of probing the ownership structure .Dana group never did wrong by investing in Nigeria .Once again, it was a regrettable and sad accident. May the lost souls rest in peace while the bereaved should trust the Creator to take control in this trying moment of a national disaster.

Nobody would blame your flippancy because you are not affected. If your entire family were wiped out by this horror you dismiss so easily as an accident, you would definitely be talking from another side of the mouth. It`s not your fault. All the testimonies that Dana has been operating defective planes including the last warning by Governor Akpabio that they should carry out proper mainteneance of their planes one of which could not land propewrly at the State airport, should be disregarded because it was just an accident. No problem, pray that you don`t get a portion soon.

Then who should we blame. Indians are known to play with people`s lives when it comes to money. The Government of Nigeria has the highest fault with corruption which has eaten deep in the Government of PDP right from Obasanjo regime.
