Nigerian militants threaten more attacks

Abuja: The militant group, which claimed
responsibility of detonating two car bombs in the Nigerian oil
city of Warri, has threatened of more attacks.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta
(MEND), which was part of a group of rebels fighting for
resource control in the Delta region, said "a third and most
powerful" bomb did not explode but would be used for future
attacks.

"It was unnecessary to detonate the third and most
powerful bomb as our operatives noticed the participants at
this jamboree fled towards the direction of the last bomb,"
MEND said in a statement.

Any attempt to detonate this bomb would have resulted in
great loss of life. This bomb is being preserved for future
use, it said without stating why it had placed third bomb or
whether it has been removed.

MEND had set-off two car bombs outside a government
building in Warri where officials had gathered for talks over
an amnesty for former rebels fighting for resource control in
the oil rich Delta region.

Meanwhile, acting Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan
has vowed to go ahead with the agreements reached during the
amnesty programme.

"I urge the population of Niger Delta and major companies
in the region to have faith in government as we are determined
to reinvigorate post-amnesty plans and programmes for the
region," Jonathan said.
