Hampton: US First Lady Michelle Obama went on a pumpkin-filled shopping spree on Wednesday, squashing a haul of Halloween produce for the White House in the back of her husband`s campaign bus.

The Obamas stopped at a Farmers Market and pumpkin patch as part of a tour of key 2012 battleground Virginia, and inspected a hoard of gourds harvested for Halloween at the end of the month.

The First Lady selected 10 pumpkins, including one handsome specimen estimated at 70 pounds (32 kilogrammes) and several white "full moon" pumpkins, which her husband paid for with a sheaf of USD 20 bills.

"Where are we going to put it? In the back of the bus?" Obama shouted to an aide as he spied the massive pumpkin, before promising staff at the market to send pictures of the produce back at the White House.

The Obamas, who launched a healthy eating crusade when they entered the White House, also bought two red apples, a bag of peanuts and a jar of what appeared to be honey.
