Jerusalem: A rocket fired from Gaza hit southern Israel on Friday, the Israeli police said, adding that it fell on open ground without causing casualties or damage.

It was the third rocket attack since the end in August of the 50-day Gaza war. The last incident was on October 31.

Hamas and Israel agreed a ceasefire on August 26, brokered by Egypt, ending 50 days of war which resulted in the deaths of 2,140 Palestinians and 73 Israelis, most of them from the army.

The Islamist movement Hamas, which de facto rules the Gaza Strip and is committed to the destruction of Israel, had on Sunday held a military parade, during which it displayed rocket and mortar launchers.

Sporadic rocket fire from the Gaza Strip is usually claimed by smaller militant factions rather than Hamas.

Cairo talks between Israel and Hamas to cement the fragile truce, due to be held last month, were called off by Egypt.
