Swine flu: Nigeria records first case

A nine-year old American girl has become the first case of swine flu in Nigeria, Health Ministry said.

The Ministry of health said yesterday the girl living in Lagos, has recovered fully from H1N1 after five days of treatment.

"There is no cause for alarm because the father, brother, all school contacts and every other person around the girl have been tested and none tested positive to H1N1 flu" Health Minister Dr Babatunde Osotimehin said.

The ministry said active surveillance carried out by the state has shown that there is no other reported case so far.

"The Federal Ministry of Health and all the states` have strengthened their preparedness and response plans and have put in place enhanced surveillance to pick up and contain any case that may occur," an official statement said.

"Indeed, all 36 states` epidemiologists are currently meeting in Kaduna to fine-tune the country`s coordinated response to possible outbreaks of epidemics," it said.

The country`s Health Ministry said it has provided Tamiflu, the antiviral drug for treatment and other medical supplies for containment of cases of the Influenza and also started creating public awareness.
