London: Six persons, including a woman, were today arrested in the UK following anti-terrorism raids across London and the Midlands region of England.

Four men from Derby, aged between 22 and 36, along with a 27-year-old man from Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire, and a 32-year-old woman from London were held by police.

Officers from the North East Counter Terrorism Unit continue to search six properties related to the arrest.

"Six people have this morning (Monday, December 12) been arrested on suspicion of offences under the Terrorism Act... [They] have all been arrested on suspicion of engaging in the Preparation of an Act of Terrorism, contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. The six people are currently in police custody," the unit said in a statement.

"We recognise that local people may have concerns as a result of these arrests and local officers will be out in the area as usual to speak to anyone who may have concerns.

We would ask people to remain alert and vigilant but not to be alarmed and we are grateful for the assistance, support and understanding of people locally," it added.

Described as an "ongoing investigation" led by the North East Counter Terrorism Unit, the raids were supported by local officers from Derbyshire, Staffordshire and the Metropolitan Police.
