Hyderabad: A student of the Osmania University here was stabbed for supporting a beef festival organised by several student groups opposing "food fascism" in hostels, police said Monday. The beef festival saw clashes, which saw five students being injured, and even led to vehicles being burnt.

The situation in the university was tense as violence continued in the campus past midnight with a group of students attacking the 'C' hostel and stabbing a student for supporting the beef festival. Police said the injured student was admitted to Gandhi Hospital here.

Protestors set afire a bus of state-owned Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).

The clashes broke out Sunday night after some Dalit and left-wing student groups organised a beef festival on the campus, to highlight their demand for including beef in the hostel menu. Over 200 students and some professors attended the festival and ate various dishes made of beef.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists staged a protest against the festival and clashed with the organisers. The two groups attacked each other with stones and sticks. Five students were injured in the clashes. Two vehicles were also set afire.

Police used teargas shells and batons to disperse the clashing groups. The campus, which witnessed many violent protests over separate Telangana state during last two years, turned into a battlefield.

The beef festival was organised by Telangana Students Association, Progressive Democratic Student Union, Student Federation of India and student groups from English and Foreign Languages University.

The organisers claimed that beef is the part of their cultural identity and an affordable source of nutrition. They said the festival was to oppose 'food fascism' in university hostels.

Supporting the demand, PL Visweswara Rao, former professor of communication and journalism at the university, said students have a right to seek a particular food. He alleged that the police and the university administration failed to protect the students participating in the festival.

Th ABVP, which opposed the beef festival, called for university shutdown Monday.

Police have sealed all the routes leading to the university and deployed additional police and paramilitary forces on the campus to prevent further clashes.

This is only to irritate hindus and organisers are interested to show that they can can do everything in the name of secular india. They show no concern for the religious emotions of Hindus. Can we imagine the pork meat festival in Osmania University or anywhere in India? What do the organisers want to achieve is to insult the Hindus only. They should be booked for hurting the sentiments of Hindus who have strong faith in the sanctity of Cow.

There is no problem for any one eating anything. Why organise a festival. tomorrow you start another ``pork festival`` and provoke Muslims. Do whatever you want in your own quiet way. If you want to celebrate one`s food another man`s poison as festival it is provocative and should be condemned. Because it has motive to insult others. Freedom is not licence to do whatever one wants.

Dear Anmol! Whatever happens is for the good cause. Now vultures and dogs are not seen and due to pollution other carnivorous animals are also extinct. Thank god. it has produced a new variety of animal to eat beaf, pork and other dead animals which are otherwise a source of pollution. This new variety is seen in Osmania Beafeaters University.

The fact is that before Islam and Christianity was introduced into India by Mughals and West we only had Hindus and the only people who ate beef were Chamaars and Bhangis who call themselves Dalits today. These Dalits also used to any animals even rats in Tamil Nadu.On the basis of quota system they have become professors in university and also there are lots who gets admitted in University on quota and these people are encouraging this beef culture. In west where due to the cold climatic condition they cannot grow enough cereals and vegetables so they eat flesh but in India we have abundant of fruits, vegetables and cereals then why do we need to copy the west.

Not allowing beef in the hostel is not food fascism but respect of a religion and religious sentiments. Unfortunately hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus has become another name of secularism. In Hyderabad most of the well-known hotels they don`t serve beef or pork. Shall we call that also ``food fascism``? No, that is respect of religious sentiments. If not allowing beef is food fascism, then not allowing pork is also food fascism. If some groups can organize beef festival, can the same groups organize pork festival also?

The media has been for some time falling into the trap of identifying a section of Hindus as Dalits and picturing them as a non-Hindu or anti-Hindu category. All differences within Hinduism are due to the liberty provided by Hinduism to live as one deems fit, the only restriction being not hurting others in the process. There are no doubt many among Hindus who partake beef. They are neither restricted to any Dalit categorization nor are all categorized Dalits beef eaters. The media should always use the phrase ``a section of Hindus`` rather than ``Dalit``.

WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE TRYING TO HURT HINDU SENTIMENTS BY ORGANISING SUCH EVENTS? CAN WE ALSO HOLD A PORK FESTIVAL?
