Heat wave: Death toll crosses 1300 mark in Andhra Pradesh

The death toll due to searing heatwave sweeping Andhra Pradesh has crossed the 1300 mark on Thursday and has claimed 314 more lives in the last 24 hours, officials said.

"As per information available till 8.30 PM , the toll has reached 1334," officials of State Disaster Management Department told PTI here.

Prakasam accounted for maximum number of 305 deaths followed by Guntur 197, East Godavari 158, Visakhapatnam - 157, Vizianagaram 128, Nellore 102, Krishna district - 66, Srikakulam - 57 , Chittoor 56, Kadapa - 34 , Kurnool and Anantapur - 28 each West Godawari - 18, Srikakulam - 57

The heatwave toll pertains from May 18 till 8.30 pm today, the officials said.

Yesterday the death toll stood at 1020.

According to the MeT department, heatwave conditions prevailed over many parts in the districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasham and Nellore of Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

On Tuesday, the highest maximum temperature of 47 degrees Celsius was recorded at Nandigama and Ongole.
