Hyderabad: Following reports of drunkards creating nuisance in several areas of the city, causing harassment especially to women and children, police have prohibited consumption of liquor in public places for a week.

Drunkards were reportedly indulging in "abrasive unruly and indecent behaviour towards law abiding citizens especially women and children, in particular endangering their modesty and safety", Police Commissioner M Mahendar Reddy said in a release.

Though consumption of liquor in public places is already illegal, it "is considered necessary to take speedy measures in this regard to prevent danger to human life and safety and security of women and children or for preventing any affray and disturbance of public tranquillity", the release said.

The order, issued under section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code, would be in force from July 5 to July 11.
