70,426 convicted in Bihar since 2006: Govt

Patna: Altogether 70,426 persons have been
convicted for various crimes in Bihar since 2006, a state
minister said on Thursday.

Of the 70,426 persons convicted, more than 47,000 were
sentenced to imprisonment for two years or more, making them
ineligible for any government job or elected as a public
representative, Water Resources Department Minister Vijay
Kumar Chaudhary told the Legislative Council in reply to
the debate on the home department budget for 2012-13.

"The conviction of such a large number by various courts
has reflected the state government`s sincerity to deal with
the crime and restore a peaceful law and order situation in
the state," Chaudhary said.

The imprisonment for two years and more of a majority
of the convicted persons acted as a deterrent against other
people taking to unlawful action and such quantum of
punishment could bar them from jobs and related public
service, the WRD Minister said.

Chaudhary also quashed the Opposition charge that the
law and order situation in Bihar has worsened during the
NDA rule and the crime graph increased particularly since the
ruling coalition was re-elected to power in 2010.

He said that the overall crime figure has declined by 25
to 27 per cent since the NDA came to power in 2005.

About an incident in which a woman was killed by
unidentified criminals in Jamui district two days ago,
Chaudhary said the police were investigating the case and
those found guilty will not be spared.

Earlier, leader of Opposition Gulam Gaus slammed the state
for rising incidence of crime, particularly against the
minorities, OBCs and the dalits.

Gaus said that people were no more safe in the state
despite the government`s claim of a peaceful law and order
situation in Bihar.

He led the Opposition MLCs in staging a walk out from
the House while the WRD Minister was replying to the debate.
