Bihar to ask cos to provide jobs to ragpickers

Bihar government would ask the companies involved in the process of disposal, collection and separation of wastes to provide employment to ragpickers, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said today.

Patna: Bihar government would ask the companies involved in the process of disposal, collection and separation of wastes to provide employment to ragpickers, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said today.

Modi told a function here that the urban solid waste disposal was a big problem and the companies engaged through outsourcing for disposal, collection and separation of wastes should try to provide gainful employment to the ragpickers.

Lots of people were engaged in the work of picking up, disposal and collection and segregation of waste because of poverty, Modi said.

"And in the given situation help to ragpickers can come in handy", he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister said the segregation of waste through biodegradable and other forms was a big challenge facing the country and the ragpickers should be trained for the purpose.

He said the help of Self Help Group (SHG) can be taken in this connection.

Modi said the Jindal company would soon start the work of lifting and disposal of wastes in 62 wards of the Patna Municipal Corporation.
