Police fired teargas shells and baton charged a mob that indulged in stone throwing, injuring 10 policemen and three women, including DySP Sadanand Singh, over alleged kidnapping attempt of a child at Barari.

Bhagalpur: Police fired teargas
shells and baton charged a mob that indulged in stone
throwing, injuring 10 policemen and three women, including
deputy superintendent of police Sadanand Singh, over alleged
kidnapping attempt of a child at Barari in Bhagalpur district
today, the police said.

Local people saw three women, who had come from Banka
to Barari, talking with a child, suspected them to be child
lifters and captured them.

The police came and took the women into custody when
the agitated villagers started beating them up, the sources
said, adding the police later bolted the women inside a room
of a school for their protection.

Knowing that the police were protecting them, the
locals ransacked the school, pulled the women out of the room
and assaulted them with lathis. As the situation went beyond
the control, the police baton charged and fired teargas shells
to disperse the mob.

Two of the women, whose names were not immediately
known, were critically wounded in the attack and were admitted
to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital here amid
heavy security bandobast.

Police patrolling was intensified as tension mounted
in the area, the sources said.

Five persons were detained by the police in this
connection.
