Delhi government on Thursday directed all private and government schools to remain closed till Jan 12 in view of the intense cold in the capital.

New Delhi: The Delhi government Thursday directed all private and government schools to remain closed till Jan 12 in view of the intense cold in the capital.

Earlier, the administration had ordered schools to be closed till the first week of January.

We were already mulling extending the closure of schools when we received complaints from some parents that several private schools were functioning despite the order being in place," said a Delhi government official.

"The directorate of education has issued order to all the recognised, private, municipal, and government schools to remain closed up to Jan 12 and comply with the orders strictly," he added.

"Non-compliance of the orders will be viewed seriously," he said.

A cold wave is sweeping across north India sending temperatures plunging. Delhi Wednesday witnessed the coldest day in the past 44 years.
