New Delhi: A special court here on Monday sentenced a former CBI SP to five years in jail and a fine of more than Rs five lakh for accepting a bribe to influence a probe into a case investigated by the agency in 1999.
The court held guilty the then agency SP Murari Lal under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and fined the ex-officer a total of Rs 5.20 lakh for the same offences, CBI said.
Deputy SP, Ram Chandra, involved in the same case, died during the trial, the agency said.

The allegation, according to CBI, against the duo was that "the accused persons were acting as middlemen between suspects/accused persons of some cases under investigation in CBI and the concerned investigating officers/law officers with a criminal conspiracy to subvert investigation of such cases by influencing the IO/law officers in favour of the accused persons and in the process had accepted huge amounts as illegal gratification for such IOs/legal officers and for themselves."
