NHRC seeks report from Delhi govt on Asha Kiran deaths

The National Human Rights Commission has taken cognizance of reports of death of 12 inmates of a government-run observation home meant for special children here and asked the Delhi government to file a "detailed report".

Commission has taken cognizance of reports of death of 12
inmates of a government-run observation home meant for special
children here and asked the Delhi government to file a
"detailed report".

"The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice
to the Chief Secretary, NCT of Delhi calling for a detailed
report into the cause of death of inmates of Asha Kiran Home
and also on its state of affairs." the rights body said in a
statement.

Congnizance of the matter was taken by the Commission
yesterday on the basis of a complaint filed by rights activist
Prabir Kumar Das, it said.

The Commission said that Das, quoting media reports,
alleged that 12 mentally challenged inmates of Asha Kiran
Home, which is run by the Delhi Government in Rohini, died
during last one month and sought its intervention.

Out of this, three died within 24 hours allegedly due to
lack of basic facilities such as warm clothes, it added.

"The Commission has asked the Chief Secretary, NCT of
Delhi to submit a detailed report in the matter within four
weeks from the receipt of the notice," the rights body said.
