‘Over 2200 women in the Defence Services’

Permanent commission has been granted in selected branches of the armed forces to women officers whose present strength in the Services is over 2,200, the Lok Sabha was told on Tuesday.

New Delhi: Permanent commission has been
granted in selected branches of the armed forces to women
officers whose present strength in the Services is over 2,200,
the Lok Sabha was told on Tuesday.

"The present strength of women officers in the three
Services of the armed forces is 2,223. Service-wise, there are
1055 women officers in the Army, 936 in the Air Force and 232
in the Navy," Defence Minister AK Antony said yesterday.

In 2008, the government granted permanent commission
prospectively to Short Service Commission (Women) officers to
be inducted in Judge Advocate General (JAG) Department and
Army Education Corps (AEC) of Army and their corresponding
branches in the Navy and the Air Force, Accounts Branch of the
Air Force and Naval Constructor of the Navy, the minister
said.

He said there is no separate fixed sanctioned strength
for recruitment of women in the armed forces and they are
recruited within the overall authorised strength of the
respective services.
