New Delhi: The notorious Kachcha-Baniyan gangs, which were once synonymous with terror in the outskirts of Delhi, have returned after years of oblivion, police said after they arrested five such gang members in connection with the last Sunday`s brutal murder of a 21-year-woman in Outer Delhi`s Narela area.
The gang members, identified as Mohabbat (23), Anis alias Firsat (20), Madu (22), Sagar (23) and Rahim alias Raju (20) were arrested on Wednesday by the Special Staff of Outer district.
"The gang had murdered a 22-year-old woman and left her 42-year-old mother seriously injured on Sunday. They had attacked them with an intention to rob as the men of the house were sleeping at a nearby plot. Unable to find much to steal, they had even torn the earlobes of the deceased to take away her earrings," said a police officer.
But this was not the only crime they had done that night, a series of robberies were committed by them during which many people were badly injured.
During investigation, a police team learnt that some men, suspected to be behind the crime. Were living near the Narela Railway Crossing.
They were found to have set up five tents on an open government land and had been putting up there for the last two months. A police team raided the spot during which five were nabbed, while one managed to escape.
During interrogation, they revealed that they hailed from Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. They are nomads and they do not stay more than six months at a place.
"They commit crime only on the dark nights. During day time they show magic tricks in nearby localities and also identify the places to be targeted at night. They generally wear only underwear and vest while committing the crime," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Vikramjeet Singh.
They always hit their victim on the head with wooden stick or stones and ensure that the person becomes unconscious, especially the male members of the targeted house so that there is no resistance from the women folk. They generally target isolated houses and habitation on the outskirts of towns and villages, he said.
Further investigations are underway and a hunt is on to nab the other accused, police said.
