Gujarat HC gets six Additional Judges

Six Additional Judges were on Tuesday appointed to the Gujarat High Court.

New Delhi: Six Additional Judges were on Tuesday appointed to the Gujarat High Court.

The appointments assume significance as no new judges
have been appointed to the High Court since November 2007. The
lawyers of the High Court had been protesting delays in
appointment of judges.

Those appointed today are Rashmin Manharbhai Chhaya,
Jamshed Burjor Pardiwala, Gautam Babubhai Shah, Bela Madhurya
Trivedi, Pradipkumar Premshanker Bhatt and Sonia Giridhar
Gokani, a Law Ministry statement said here.

While four additional judges have been elevated from the
judiciary, two are from the Bar.

While Shah was till now the Registrar General of the HC,
Gokani was Registrar (Recruitment). Bhatt and Trivedi were
senior Additional City Civil and Sessions judges.

Those elevated from the Bar are Pardiwala, a former
standing counsel, and Chhaya, standing counsel for the
Government of India.

At present the Gujarat High Court has 23 judges against
the approved strength of 42.
