Mumbai docs use cosmetic-friendly method to remove gallbladder

Mumbai: A new cosmetic-friendly technique
requiring less medication has been used by a hospital here to
remove gall bladder with stones from a patient.

"The technique is known as `SILS-Port`, a US FDA approved
technique which was introduced in India a fortnight back," Dr
Deepraj Bhandarkar, Consultant Minimal Access Surgeon of
Hinduja Hospital said today.

SILS cholecystectomy (removal of gall bladder) was
performed on a 50-year-old patient and he is recovering fast,
he said.

"In Single Incision Laproscopic Surgery (SILS), the
laparoscope and other instruments are inserted through a
single incision of 1.5 to 2 cms in length placed below the
navel," he said.

"Eliminating the need for multiple incisions offers
patients the potential for less post-operative pain than
traditional laparoscopic surgery. Also, the main benefit is
that the patients, especially women, get a scar that over a
period of time virtually fades away," he said.

Bhandarkar said we have also performed surgery using
SILS-Port technique for removal of ovary and appendix.

"This new technique results in reduced discomfort, less
pain medication besides it being cosmetic friendly,"
Bhandarkar added.

At present, SILS is a technique under evolution. However,
over a period of time, this patient-friendly technique will
become widely utilised by surgeons for treatment of a variety
of abdominal diseases, Bhandarkar said.

Until a few months ago, traditional laparoscopic surgery
required four small abdominal incisions for removal of the
gallbladder, two to three days of recovery in the hospital and
two to three weeks of convalescence, he said.
