About 80 percent voters cast their ballots in the third phase of panchayat elections in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday.

Shimla: About 80 percent voters cast their ballots in the third phase of panchayat elections in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, officials said.

Elections were held in as many as 1011 panchayats, with Sirmaur and Una districts recording a voter turnout of 86.33
and 81.01 percent respectively.

Mandi, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Shimla, Kullu and Kangra recorded 75 to 85 percent polling while elections in 14 panchayats in snowbound Kalpa and Nichar sub divisions of Kinnaur district had been postponed to January 5 due to heavy snowfall in the region, they said.

Elections in 48 panchayats in Lahaul and parts of Shimla and Kullu districts would be held after the winter.

Women turned up in large numbers and long queues of women were seen at the polling booths in morning hours in lower areas while polling was brisk during the day in mid and higher hills, they said.

The polling was held in three phases on December 28, December 30 and January 1 and the average polling in three
phases was between 78 and 83 percent.
