Shimla: Annoyed that 99 mobile towers were
functioning illegally in Shimla, the Himachal Pradesh
government on Wednesday said the unauthorised installations would be
looked into seriously.
A total of 118 mobile towers have been working in Shimla
at present. Out of this 16 were put up after taking
permission, case of three was sub-judice while 99 others have
come without following due legal process, urban development
minister Mohinder Singh said in reply to a question in the
state assembly.

He said a clear-cut policy was formulated in August, 2006
for installation of mobile tower with guidelines like: no
tower would be set up within 100 metre of a health/educational
centre and in residential areas it could be put up only after
obtaining no objection certificate (NOC) from residents.
Fees for installation of tower in Shimla municipal
corporation areas and those in tribal areas of the state have
also been delineated, the assembly was told.

Singh said a nationally reputed agency would be
entrusted the task to study impact of radiations and chemicals
from mobile towers on health and environment in surrounding
areas.
