New Delhi: According to the latest media report, which is likely to bring a new twist to the Rohith Vemula suicide case, the Hyderabad University was not a Dalit but an OBC.

Quoting a top police official, the Times of India on Saturday reported that following the initial investigations, it has been revealed that Rohith Vemula's parents belong to the stonecutting caste of Vadera, which is an Other Backward Class (OBC).

Police are not investigating that how Rohith Vemula's parents managed to get a caste certificate for SC/ST. The caste certificate of Vemula from Guntur states that he belonged to Mala community, a schedule caste.

The police said that Rohith Vemula's caste angle is being probed after a request from certain persons. The police refused to reveal the names of these people. 

If the recent reports, if found true, are likely to have serious implications on the whole episode as the cases against Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya , BJP MLC Ramachandra Rao and University's Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao, who have been booked under the SC/ST Act.

University of Hyderabad has been on boil since Rohith Vemula, a Ph.D scholar here committed suicide following alleged harassment by local BJP leaders and University V-C Appa Rao.
