Teenager dies in youth-police clashes

A teenaged boy was killed and at least six were injured in clashes between stone-pelting protesters and police who fired teargas shells in different parts of the city this evening to restore calm.

Srinagar: A teenaged boy was killed and
at least six were injured in clashes between stone-pelting
protesters and police who fired teargas shells in different
parts of the city this evening to restore calm.

The boy, aged 16 years, was hit by a teargas shell
on the head near Gani Stadium in Rajouri Kadal area in the
interior of the city, official sources said.

He was rushed to Soura Medical Institute where he
succumbed to his injuries, they said adding the police burst
teargas shells to disperse the stone-hurling mob.

The old city has been witnessing violent clashes
between the youth and police especially on Fridays and Sundays
for the past two years.

As news of his death spread, clashes broke out in
adjoining Gojwara, Nowhatta and other areas leaving at least
six injured.

Adequate police have been deployed in trouble-torn
areas, where the situation was tense, to maintain law and
order.
