Kochi: A man claiming to be close to P
Chidambaram gave police some anxious moments when he greeted
the Union home minister and presented him a shawl on his way
to the airport.

Venkitachalam claimed he knew Chidambaram which was
why he presented a shawl to him yesterday at Aluva as the
minister was on his way to the airport to leave for
Lakshadweep.

As the minister`s motorcade slowed down near Aluva
bypass, Chidambaram accepted the shawl from Venkitachalam.
Police then asked Venkitachalam, a businessman, to
report to the Aluva police station where he had to spend
nearly three hours.

Police denied harassing him.

"As part of abundant caution, Venkitachalam was asked
to come to the police station to record his statement and
verification. The verification took some time," Aluva SP T
Vikram told PTI.

"There was no intention of harassing him. We did go
through the drill," he said.

Venkitachalam, who hails from Tamil Nadu, claimed that
he had a long association with the minister.
