Thane: Apparently upset over a failed love affair, a 20-year-old college girl allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a river.

Vidya Davre, a senior year BSc student at a college in Kalyan township of Thane district, was friendly with a boy, also studying in the same institution, assistant police inspector A M Khatif said.

The duo used to exchange messages on their mobile phones.

Yesterday, the girl sent text message to the boy on his phone. After the boy did not reply, the girl jumped into the Ghandhari river at Kalyan, he said.

A passer-by spotted the girl near the river and rushed to persuade her against taking the extreme step, but by the time he reached there, the girl had leapt into the river, the police officer said.

The body was later fished out and based on the I-card left by the girl in her college bag near the river, police identified her.

The police later questioned the boy in connection with the incident.

A case has been registered in this regard, police said adding that further investigation was on.
