New property tax regime in Mumbai delayed by 6 months

Mumbai: To enjoy the fruits of new
property tax regime, those living in suburbs will have to wait
for at least six months as local civic body has failed to
execute the new method due to delay in obtaining Geographical
Information System (GIS).

Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has
said it would take few months to start calculating the
property tax as per the capital value of property due to
delay in acquiring GIS system.

The proposal of implementing the new property tax
system was passed in January which is expected to lower the
tax burden on those living in the suburbs.

The GIS involves usage of images captured by the
QuickBird satellite imaging system to map properties including
their carpet area.

With the GIS system, the civic administration would be
able to ascertain exact number of houses both in the city and
suburbs and exact dimensions of these houses among other
factors. This would help MCGM charge property tax accurately.

"The implementation of the new tax structure is going
to be delayed mainly due to delay in acquiring the GIS system
for mapping the city`s properties. We would conduct a physical
survey of properties and MCGM has floated tenders for the
same," Chief Assessor and Collector N A Pathan said.

"The survey and a measurement of the area of all
properties will take about six months," Pathan said.
