PIL opposes reported upgradation of Mumbai Police chief post

A PIL has been filed in the Bombay High Court against Maharashtra Government`s "reported" decision to upgrade the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP).

Mumbai: A PIL has been filed in the
Bombay High Court against Maharashtra Government`s "reported"
decision to upgrade the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner to
the rank of Director General of Police (DGP).

Petitioner Edrich Miranda, a local activist, has
alleged that though the rank of the Mumbai Police chief is
that of an Additional DGP, there are reports that it would be
upgraded to the rank of DGP.

Miranda has made Secretary, Home department and DGP
as respondents to the petition.

Upgradation of the post of Mumbai Police chief to the
rank of DGP would create confusion, according to Miranda.

He contended that according to the police rules for
internal administration, a decision taken by Commissioner of
Police can be challenged by way of an appeal to the DG, and
since the state has decided to upgrade the CP`s post, there
would be no appellate authority above.
