Thane: Even as the proposal to bifurcate Thane district was to come into effect from Wednesday, Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik said it could not take place due to "technical reasons" but will "surely happen" in future.
"The government was making all out efforts to divide Thane which could not happen for technical reasons, but that does not mean that the government has now given up on it," Naik said today at the Thane Circuit house where he halted before participating in the Maharashtra Day function.
"The government is serious about it and the division will surely happen," he said adding that though no definite time frame can be assigned to it.
Because of severe scarcity, there is paucity of funds for the division of the district, but in the long run it would be beneficial if Thane is divided into four districts, he said.
He also said that urbanisation of the district was happening on a rapid pace and the effects of the growth will be felt in the long run.
The district should not be divided just for the sake of it, but proper provision of infrastructure is needed for the new district that will be carved out, Naik said.
The division of Thane, the largest district in the state, has been long pending and it was proposed to carve a separate Palghar district out of it.
