Aus blamed for ignoring accommodation of Indian students

New Delhi: An organisation of Indian
community in Australia on Monday blamed the government there for
ignoring the accommodation issues of foreign students, as it
sought to establish a link between the attacks on Indians and
the "unsafe" area they were staying in.

President of Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria
(FIAV) Vasan Srinivasan said most of the attacks were reported
in certain specific areas. The Indian students prefer to stay
there as they get cheaper accommodation in those areas.

"Accommodation is a major problem. The private institutes
do not arrange it. I partially blame the Australian government
also. They opened the door but they did not look at how they
are going to provide accommodation to the students," he said.

Majority of the victims in Melbourne hail from Punjab and
stay in low cost accommodation in areas considered unsafe.

Most of the victims are students of private education
institutions. There are about 1200 such education institutions
and majority of them have entered into this sector only for
business, Srinivasan said.
