New Delhi: The case of gang-rape of a 23-year-old paramedic student, who had later died in a Singapore hospital, was on Thursday transferred to a fast-track court here.
The case was today transferred by Metropolitan Magistrate Namrita Aggarwal in Saket to Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna after she completed the scrutiny of documents filed with the chargesheet in the case of the December 16 gang-rape.
Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna, who will be heading the fast track court, will conduct the case against the five accused.
The case was committed to the sessions judge by Metropolitan Magistrate Namrita Aggarwal, who conducted the proceedings in-camera and all the accused were today supplied with documents related to the case.
Defence counsel ML Sharma, VK Anand, Vivek Sharma and AP Singh told reporters outside the court that they have also received the e-challan copy of the charge sheet and all the documents related to the case has also been supplied to them.
The counsel also said that the court has rejected prosecution`s plea for bringing the accused in handcuffs.
The court had earlier fixed today for scrutiny of the documents which has been completed.
The hearing in the case at the fast-track court would begin on January 21.
The fast-track court was set up earlier this month to try the case which had led to a nationwide uproar against crimes against women.
The five accused -- bus driver Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Akshay Singh – are currently in jail in connection with the case.
The case of the sixth accused - a minor - is being heard by a Juvenile Justice Board.
The victim, a paramedical student, was brutally raped and assaulted in a moving bus here on the night of December 16, 2012 and she died of injuries on December 29.
Today’s development came a day after the nation marked a month since the incident. Candlelight vigils and peaceful protests were organised across Delhi and several other cities to pay tribute to the gang-rape victim and demand safety and security for the women.
