New Delhi: B Chaterjee, one of the finest
police officers and the founder chief of the Indo-Tibetan
Border Police, passed away at his residence here today.
94-year-old Chaterjee, an officer of the 1940 Batch
Imperial Police, passed away at his residence in Chitranjan
Park this morning.
He was the first Inspector General of ITBP as there
was no post of Director General sanctioned in force in its
initial years.
Chaterjee, survived by three sons and three daughters,
had commanded ITBP from 1964 to 1974.
"ITBP participated in 1965 and 1971 war under his able
leadership and won laurels," R K Bhatia, DG, ITBP said.
"He gave shape to ITBP which later emerged as an elite
force of India. He selected all the Border out posts (BOP) and
battalion locations of ITBP keeping in view the tactical,
strategic and administrative factors.
"Most of these locations are still being maintained.
He was great strategist and trained guerrilla warfare expert,"
a statement released by the force said.
His elder son Deepak Chaterjee, IAS, was a former
commerce secretary and Indian Ambassador to European Union and
Belgium.
His second son Bijoy Chaterjee, IAS, is former petro-
chemical secretary of India, while his third son Amit
Chaterjee is Commissioner of Income Tax.
