Peeved at the party high command`s decision to deny him the Lok Sabha ticket, Singh later contested the polls as an independent candidate from Barmer and formally resigned from the BJP.
The veteran leader, however, lost the election.
Singh held the finance, defence and external affairs ministries in previous NDA governments.
