New Delhi: In one of the most candid admissions by a senior judge, former Supreme Court judge Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly said the judiciary in the country has never treated with dignity.
Justice Ganguly, who served as SC judge till February 2012, opined that when it came to safeguarding women, the judiciary is not following the Constitution and stressed the need to sensitise the judges.
He also criticised the delay in trials of rape cases. "The Constitution talks of equal status, equal opportunities. I want to say that we have never treated women with dignity," Justice Ganguly told English news channel NDTV.
He also pointed out that some rape cases have dragged on for 10-15 years and despite the apex court’s best efforts, these could not be disposed of quickly.
Justice Ganguly is currently the Chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission and an Honorary Professor at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences.
During his tenure at the Supreme Court he had delivered some high-profile verdicts including in the 2G spectrum scam.
