The Left front Wednesday urged the Centre to take steps to contain violence in Kokrajhar and adjoining districts in Lower Assam from where affected people have fled to north Bengal districts.

Kolkata: The Left front Wednesday urged the Centre to take steps to contain violence in Kokrajhar and adjoining districts in Lower Assam from where affected people have fled to north Bengal districts.
"The Left Front demands that the Centre take whatever effective steps possible to curb growing violence in Lower Assam and restore peace," Front chairman Biman Bose said.

Expressing concern over the violence, Bose said, "Violence has gripped Chirang, Bongaigaion, Udalguri and some areas encompassing some hundreds of villages``.

Bose said several homeless people fled the violence-hit areas in panic and took shelter in Coochbehar and Jalpaiguri districts.

He urged the state government to deploy police and para-military forces on the West Bengal-Assam border immediately.

The Left Front appealed to right-thinking people in the West Bengal-Assam border to play the effective role in curbing the fratricidal clashes in lower Assam districts.
