Mohta, who has been Director of the Nehru Centre and Minister, Culture in the Indian High Commission for the last four and a half years described her tenure as "very fulfilling and very productive" and thanked the staff of the Centre for their support.

"I move on to Warsaw as head of the mission and after 26 years my learning process is about to begin," she said.

Describing her as "wonderful people's person", Baroness Shriela Flather said last night: "We are sorry to lose you but Poles are going to adore you".

She said during her tenure here she had tried to provide better programme content, reach out to other cultural bodies and audience building.
