New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that monsoon may be deficient in the month of July this year.
The deficit in rainfall will affect the states of Karnataka, North-East and oilseed-growing areas of Gujarat. However, recovery of monsoon is expected in rice-growing areas, according to IMD.
The Met department further has said that El Nino effect, that causes temperature variations, is expected to take place in August and September.
According to IMD, the reason behind some deficit has been attributed to the delayed onset of monsoon which arrived a week later than expected this year.
"This season has seen a 43 percent deficit in rainfall in the capital. Countrywide, there`s a 23 percent deficit but we expect that the rains will pick up in a few days," the IMD official told a news agency.
The normal rainfall expected till July 15 is 153.8 mm, while this year, the capital has received only 87.6 mm rainfall so far and faced a rainfall deficit of 43 percent.
