Narendra Modi surpasses White House in Twitter follower count

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the fifth most “followed” world leader on Twitter, on Wednesday overtook the White House in terms of number of followers on the social networking website.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the fifth most “followed” world leader on Twitter, on Wednesday overtook the White House in terms of number of followers on the social networking website.

Modi is now the fourth most followed world leader on microblogging site, whereas he was ranked sixth last month. At the time of filing of this story, the data shows that the Indian Prime Minister currently has 4,984,399 followers compared to the number of people following the White House, which is 4,980,933.

Earlier, Modi skyrocketed to the fifth place, leaving behind Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the sixth and seventh place, respectively. Both the leaders have over four million followers.

US President Barack Obama remains the most followed world leader on Twitter followed by Pope Francis.
Also, at the time of General Elections 2014 results on May 16, Modi`s `Ache Din Aane Waale Hain` tweet created a record as it was retweeted 39,742 times and favourited 21,691 times that day, and currently it has been retweeted and favourited over 70,000 and 46,000 times, respectively.

Twitter India had then also confirmed saying, "Yes, it is the most retweeted tweet till date on Twitter from India. Also, it is the fastest to reach 10,000, 20,000, 40,000 and 50,000, respectively".
