PM announces ex-gratia assistance for Phailin cyclone victims

PM on Tuesday announced Rs 2 lakh as ex-gratia assistance to the kin of each of those killed and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured.

New Delhi: Distressed over the extensive damage caused by cyclone Phailin, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday announced Rs 2 lakh as ex-gratia assistance to the kin of each of those killed and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured.

Reviewing the impact of the cyclone, Singh complimented the efforts of the authorities of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, relief workers, National Disaster Management Authority, National Disaster Relief Force and the Indian Meteorological Department, for preventive measures they took which resulted in containing the effects of the cyclone on human life.

"The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia assistance of Rs 2,00,000 to the next of kin of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured in the cyclone, from the Prime Minister`s National Relief Fund," a PMO release said.

It said the Prime Minister is relieved to learn that, even though Cyclone Phailin was a very severe cyclonic storm, the loss of life has been contained to a very large extent because of the preventive measures taken in advance.

"However, the Prime Minister noted with distress the extensive damage to property, crops and livestock that has resulted from the cyclone," the release said.

Singh also expressed his sympathies for those who lost their near and dear ones or have lost their houses, crops or livestock.
