New Delhi: Around 20 women activists were
detained by Delhi Police for blocking traffic near Parliament
this evening protesting the delay in the passage of the
Women`s Reservation Bill.

The protesters converged at the Parliament Gate at around
5 pm and blocked traffic demanding the immediate clearance of
the Bill, which will pave the way for 33 per cent reservation
for women in Parliament and state legislatures.

The slogan shouting activists were immediately detained
by police personnel.

"Staging protest near Parliament is unacceptable and it
is violation of Section 144. We have detained them," a senior
police official said.

There could not be voting as per schedule on the Bill,
which was tabled in Rajya Sabha this afternoon, due to stiff
opposition from RJD, SP and JD(U) MPs.

The historic legislation was moved in Rajya Sabha for
consideration amid unprecedented pandemonium with some SP
members even trying to attack Chairman Hamid Ansari.

SP and RJD members created unruly scenes since
morning, forcing repeated adjournments of the House. Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh has called an all-party meeting on the
Bill to find a way out.
