UK murders: Lithuanian suspect remanded to custody

The West Midlands Police had launched a major probe in the sensational case under `Operation Tiler`.

London: A Lithuanian national charged with
the murder of Indian-origin Avtar Singh Kolar and his English
wife Carole was on Monday remanded to custody and the date for the
trial was fixed as August 28.

The bodies of the Kolar couple were found by their police
officer son, Jason Kolar, on January 11 in their home in
Handsworth Wood, Birmingham.

The West Midlands Police had launched a major probe in the
sensational case under `Operation Tiler`.

Rimvydas Liorancas, 37, who appeared before the Birmingham
Crown Court for about 15 minutes, was required to enter a plea
to the murders.

He listened to the court proceedings via an interpreter
and spoke to confirm his name.

Liorancas was ordered to reappear in court for a plea
hearing on May 25 and a trial date was fixed for August 28.

The police said that forensic post mortem examinations
have been conducted, which confirmed that both the deceased
died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.

Both had been struck a number of times.

Of the other two people detained in connection with the
murders, a 41-year-old man has been released without charge,
and a 24-year-old man is on police bail.

Sector Crown Prosecutor from West Midlands Crown
Prosecution Service, Martin Lindup, said last week: "I have
advised West Midlands Police that there is sufficient evidence
and it is in the public interest to charge Rimvydas Liorancas,
aged 37, with two counts of murder following the death of
Avtar and Carole Kolar at their home in Handsworth Wood,
Birmingham".
