UK updates travel advisory for female tourists in India

The fresh advisory asked women travellers to "exercise caution when travelling in India even if they are travelling in a group".

London: Hours after a British woman jumped out of a hotel room in Agra over fears of a sex attack, UK on Tuesday updated its travel advice for women tourists to India.

The fresh advisory from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office asked women travellers to "exercise caution when travelling in India even if they are travelling in a group".

"A Swiss national suffered a serious sexual attack in Madhya Pradesh on March 16. Women travellers should exercise caution when travelling in India even if they are travelling in a group.

"British women have been the victims of sexual assault in Goa, Delhi, Bangalore and Rajasthan and women travellers often receive unwanted attention in the form of verbal and physical harassment by individuals or groups of men...," the advisory reads under the section of `Crime`.

"Avoid travelling alone on public transport, or in taxis or auto-rickshaws, especially at night. If you have to use a taxi, get them from hotel taxi ranks and use pre-paid taxis at airports. Try to avoid hailing taxis on the street," adds the advisory.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) also said it was looking into reports of a 25-year-old British tourist, a dentist from London, who was injured when she escaped an apparent sexual assault in Agra.

"We are aware of an incident involving a British national in Agra, India, and are urgently looking into it. We are in contact with local authorities and are providing consular assistance to the woman," an FCO spokesperson said.

The incident comes just days after a 39-year-old Swiss cyclist was raped by a group of villagers while on a cycling trip with her husband, which also included a stop in Agra.
