Aizawl: The ruling Congress swept the village council elections by winning in 285 out of the 493 village councils, the state election commission announced here on Saturday.

The party, however, faced a major debacle in the local council polls as it could manage to win in 29 local councils within the Aizawl Municipal Council.

The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) did well in the local council polls within the Aizawl Municipal Council by bagging 42 local councils out of 82.

In the village council election held yesterday, the MNF won 132, the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) bagged two and Hmar People's Convention (HPC) one respectively, while independents won 20 village bodies.
